Authorities say a south
Georgia man shot an armadillo, but ended up accidentally wounding his
mother-in-law when the bullet ricocheted off the mammal known for its hard
shell.
Larry McElroy, 54, was
outside his mother-in-law's mobile home in Lee
County , Georgia , on Sunday night when he
took aim at the armadillo. The shooting happened on Gosa Road .
The man was believed to be
about 100 yards from the home when he fired his 9 mm pistol at the animal.
The victim, identified in
local reports as 74-year-old Carol Johnson, was taken to Phoebe North (hospital)
and is expected to recover as her injuries are not serious. .
Deputies say the bullet
killed the armadillo, but bounced off the animal, hit a fence, travelled.
Officials acknowledged the
bizarre case defied belief.
James Morgan, the Dougherty
County Extension Coordinator, told WALB TV that shooting armadillos is
recommended for residents that live in the county, or a trap can be used to
capture them.
"At first I ask if they
live in the city or county, because shooting is an effective way of getting rid
of them. However, you have to be safe when you do that," Morgan told the
station.
Armadillos are considered a
nuisance to some homeowners because they dig for food, which can destroy a
flower bed, Scott Frazier, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources wildlife
biologist, told Fox News.
Another option to get rid of
armadillos is using grub pesticide, which kills the insects that armadillos are
usually trying to get to.
No charges have been filed so
far.
It remains to be seen how
much Ms Johnson believes in all this story. Perhaps when they will celebrate
the next birthday will collide with a glass and groom them, or maybe not ......
